What is Reiki

The short answer to “wait, what is that?”

Most simply, Reiki is a Japanese technique of healing with the hands. It channels healing energy from the universe to help relax the body and mind, ease stress and support the body’s own healing.

Sessions are gentle, with light or no touch. The receiver stays fully clothed and settles into a relaxed, meditative state.

What can Reiki help with?

Most people know the benefits of yoga and meditation. Reiki is just as accessible as those modalities and can help with:

  • Reducing stress
  • Improving sleep
  • Clearing energetic blockages
  • Shifting unwanted patterns
  • Sharpening mental clarity
  • Supporting pain relief and natural healing
  • Increasing feelings of gratitude, love and peace

Reiki is also the most-studied energy healing practice out there. As of February 2026, Reiki accounted for 130 of the 413 interventional studies on biofield therapies tracked by the Biofield Science Evidence Map.

Where does Reiki come from?

Mikao Usui developed Reiki in Japan in the early 1920s, drawing on Zen meditation. I practice in the Usui tradition, and I try to honor those Japanese roots in how I work, starting with the 5 Reiki principles (called the Gokai) that guide every session.
